The development of the snowmobile route in Eastern Lapland and Kandalaksha area in Russia


Salla-Alakurtti snowmobile route project

The overall aim of the project is to enhance sustainable land use in the cross-border area by providing a better infrastructure for snowmobile traffic. The specific objective of the project is to establish and construct an official Puukkokangas – Saija municipality boundary snowmobile route interrain that is marked accordance with the off-road traffic law.

On the Russian side a snowmobile route from Salla border station until Alakurtti will be constructed in accordance with Russian off-road traffic law. The length of the route is 29 kilometres in Finland and about 80 kilometres in Russia.

The existing route from Pajala in Sweden through Rovaniemi and Kelloselka to Salla and from the border to Alakurtti will be with a joint route sign, which is planned by project partners.

The main partner of the project is Salla Municipality and the Russian partner is the town of Kantalaksha/Alakurtti municipality. Partners in the project are also Pajala Municipality and the towns of Rovaniemi and Kemijarvi.

The participating partners of the project is financed by The Regional Council of Lapland and European Union (Interreg III A Nord -programmes Kolarctic neighbourhoodprogramme). The main financier in Russia is the European Union. The project is intended to be accomplished at the end of year 2007.
